Importance of Carrying a TQ

Don’t get caught without this crucial piece of your kit

Carrying a tourniquet every day may seem extreme or unnecessary to some, but in a world where accidents and emergencies can occur at any moment, being prepared can be the difference between life and death. Whether you’re a first responder, military personnel, or simply a prepared civilian, understanding how to use a Combat Application Tourniquet (CAT) and carrying it as part of your everyday carry (EDC) kit is essential.

That being said, the Guerrilla Tactical team is going to take you through the proper use of a CAT, explain why it’s important to EDC a tourniquet, and compare it with the Snakestaff Systems ETQ, another excellent tourniquet option.

Why Everyday Carry (EDC) a Tourniquet?

Emergencies don’t schedule appointments, and severe bleeding can occur from various incidents—car accidents, industrial mishaps, or even natural disasters. A tourniquet is one of the few tools that can stop life-threatening bleeding from a limb, giving the victim precious time to reach professional medical care.

Carrying a tourniquet as part of your EDC kit ensures that you’re prepared to handle such situations, not just for yourself but for others around you. When seconds count, having a tourniquet within arm’s reach can make all the difference. Many people carry items like a pocket knife or a flashlight; a tourniquet is equally important. Just as you might carry a concealed firearm for self-defense, a tourniquet is a tool for defending life in a medical emergency.

What is a Combat Application Tourniquet (CAT)?

The Combat Application Tourniquet (CAT) is a highly regarded tool in both military/first responder and civilian circles. It’s been proven to be highly effective in stopping blood flow in both upper and lower extremities (arms and legs), according to the U.S. Army’s Institute of Surgical Research. The CAT is designed for rapid application, even with one hand, making it an invaluable tool in high-pressure situations.

Key features of the CAT include:

  • Single Routing Buckle: This design feature allows for faster application, decreased blood loss, and effective slack removal, requiring fewer windlass turns.
  • Reinforced Windlass and Stabilization Plate: These components ensure that the tourniquet stays tight and secure, effectively controlling bleeding.
  • Red Tip Technology®: The elliptical tab provides visual clues during application, making it easier to apply quickly and correctly.
  • Compact and Lightweight: The CAT measures 6.5 inches in length and 2.7 ounces in weight, making it easy to carry without being cumbersome.

How to Apply a CAT

  1. Assess the Situation
    • Quickly determine if a tourniquet is necessary by assessing the injury. Apply direct pressure if possible while preparing the tourniquet.
  2. Position the Tourniquet
    • Place the CAT around the limb 2 to 3 inches above the wound, avoiding joints. If the wound is too close to a joint, place the tourniquet above the joint.
    • When in doubt, or in an unsecured area, i.e and active shooter situation,  apply the CAT high and tight and move yourself and the casualty to safety as quickly as possible.
  3. Apply and Secure the Tourniquet
    • Tighten the self-adhering band as much as possible before using the windlass.
  4. Tighten the Windlass
    • Twist the windlass rod until the bleeding stops or significantly reduces, and secure it in the windlass clip.
  5. Secure the Windlass
    • Fasten the windlass in place with the windlass clip and apply the time strap.
  6. Monitor the Patient
    • Continuously monitor the patient and ensure they receive medical care as soon as possible.

The Snakestaff Systems ETQ: A Compact Alternative

While the CAT is a proven and reliable option, and still one of the best TQs on the market, it can be pretty big, which stops a lot of people from carrying them as part of their everyday kits. We still think that a TQ is an essential part of your kit, so opting for something lighter but just as effective can be the best play. That being said, the Snakestaff Systems ETQ (Everyday Tourniquet) offers a more compact and lightweight alternative without sacrificing effectiveness.

Key features of the Snakestaff ETQ include:

  • Durable Materials: Made with premium materials, the ETQ is built to withstand extreme conditions and rugged use.
  • Compact and Lightweight: The ETQ measures just 1.75 inches wide and 4.5 inches long, making it small enough to fit in your pocket, backpack, or purse, ensuring you can carry it with you at all times.
  • Essential Emergency Tool: The ETQ is an essential part of any emergency kit, designed to stop life-threatening bleeding from limbs in a variety of situations.

The ETQ’s compact design makes it particularly suitable for everyday carry, especially for those who prefer a minimalistic approach to their EDC kit. It fits comfortably in small spaces, ensuring you always have it on hand.

Comparing the CAT and Snakestaff ETQ

Both the CAT and the Snakestaff ETQ are excellent tools for controlling severe bleeding, but they cater to slightly different needs.

  • Size and Portability: The Snakestaff ETQ is significantly smaller and lighter than the CAT, making it easier to carry in a pocket or small bag. The CAT, while larger, offers a more robust design with a proven track record in military settings, but not everyone wants to carry something that big, which is why the Snakestaff ETQ is a great option.
  • Application: The CAT’s design includes features like the single routing buckle and Red Tip Technology®, making it easier to apply under stress. The Snakestaff ETQ, while compact, still requires some familiarity for effective use.
  • Durability: Both tourniquets are made from high-quality materials designed to withstand extreme conditions, but the CAT’s military-grade construction gives it an edge in more rugged environments.

Ultimately, the choice between the CAT and the Snakestaff ETQ comes down to personal preference and the specific needs of your EDC kit. If space and weight are concerns, the Snakestaff ETQ is an excellent choice. For those who prioritize a proven, battle-tested tool, the CAT remains a top option on the market.
